About Heather Collins

Heather Collins, oil painter

Heather Collins is a representational oil painter working in the classical atelier tradition — building every painting from careful drawing, a full tonal foundation, and color introduced only once the structure of the piece can carry it.

Based on Merritt Island, Florida, her studio practice moves between portrait and figurative commissions, sacred devotional work, and plein air studies painted along the Indian River Lagoon and the Space Coast. Whether the subject is a sitter, a still life arrangement, or the changing light over open water, the same method applies: draw first, build value, then let color do the least amount of work necessary.

“A painting earns its light. Nothing goes in until the drawing and the values can carry it.”

Her work is held in private collections across the country, and she accepts a limited number of commissions each season.

Formal training in cast drawing, sight-size figure work, and traditional oil painting methods.

Life Painting

The majority of portrait and figurative work is painted directly from life, not solely from photographs.

Regular plein air practice along the Space Coast keeps color observation sharp for studio work.
